The Cold War emerged soon after World War II, dividing the Allies into Eastern and Western Blocs, Communism versus Capitalism. Two of the first to recognize the dangers of that new conflict were the authors and survivors of WWII, George Orwell and Winston Churchill. The first of many ‘Proxy Wars’ between the communists and capitalists was the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
In 1961, the author joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a sonarman to hunt Soviet submarines. John F. Kennedy became President of the United States; Nikita Khrushchev was the Soviet premier, and Fidel Castro was the leader of Cuba. The Cold War soon reached its pinnacle in October 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis. Canadian warships hunted for Soviet submarines and checked Soviet fishing trawlers on the Grand Banks. The author also experienced the border between a divided Germany and Berlin and the Soviet-backed struggle against Apartheid in South Africa.
